Groundwater is a major source of water in Texas, providing about 60 percent of the 16.1 million acre-feet of water used in the state. There are 99 groundwater conservation districts in Texas: 97 are confirmed (note: this estimate includes several districts that do not require confirmation) and two have yet to be confirmed by voters through local elections.
