Area Regulations:
  • Camping and OHV use are not permitted
  • Located at the northwest end of Lake Berryessa, off Pope Canyon Road.
  • From Rutherford take Highway 128 east. Turn left on Chiles Pope Valley for several miles to Pope Canyon Road.
  • From Winters take Highway 128 west. Turn right on Lower Chiles Valley Road, then right on Chiles Pope Valley Road for several miles to Pope Canyon Road.
  • The western parcel lies 4.2 miles west of Pope Creek bridge and provides access to 160 acres of BLM land via Pope Canyon Road at the confluence of Maxwell Creek with Pope Creek.
  • The eastern parcel lies 2.2 miles west of Pope Creek bridge and provides access to the 6,350 acres of BLM's Cedar Roughs Wilderness Study Area.
  • Access to both areas requires crossing Pope Creek by foot - crossing is only possible during the dry season.
  • The Cedar Roughs Wildlife Area consists of two separate parcels totaling 413 acres of brush covered canyons, serpentine grasslands, oak woodlands, and riparian habitats. The areas provide access to larger Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Bureau of Reclamation ownerships (BOR).
Recreational Use:
  • Type C Wildlife Area
  • Hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing are permitted. Some wildlife that may be seen includes bobcat, gray fox, raccoon, golden eagle, wrentit, yellow-rumped warbler, and acorn woodpecker.
  • Primitive camping is allowed on the BLM lands adjacent to Cedar Roughs.
  • Cedar Roughs Wildlife Area is designated as a "non-mechanized access only" Wildlife Area. Hunting is legal during designated seasons. Common game species include deer, bobcat, gray squirrel, rabbit, wild turkey, quail, and dove. It is unlawful to shoot within 150 yards of a developed site or dwelling including campgrounds, and from or across any road or trail. Please carry out your used cartridges and trash.
