Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust

The Chelmsford Land Trust Conservation Trust's primary mission is to preserve open space. We are also an advocate for land conservation "in our back yard," and will work to encourage interest in Chelmford's natural history and heritage.

Recent activities include:

•Leading birding walks and nature walks
•Organizing trail and property maintenance efforts, including Eagle Scout projects
•Providing bluebird nesting boxes (bluebirds are back!)
•Participating in the annual town-wide cleanup
•Holding an annual meeting on the 3rd Wednesday in May with featured speakers
•Conducting a mapping project with elementary students

The Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust can help you investigate conservation options for your land. Key conservation options available under Massachusetts law include:

  • Voluntary programs for preferential tax assessment based on current use of forest, agriculture, recreation lands (Massachusetts Code, Chapter 61, 61A, and 61B).

  • Conservation restriction, which permanently limits a property's use, even if the land is sold or donated.

  • Gift or bargain sale of land or development rights to an IRS-recognized conservation organization, which can reduce income and property taxes in the short term, ad your heirs can avoid the need to develop land to pay estate taxes in the long term.

Each situation is unique, and land conservation issued require the services of an attorney. The Trust can provide you with some direction, materials, and information to help you get started.
