Community Open Land Trust

Community Open Land Trust is a member-based non-profit organization dedicated to shielding natural areas from change and encouraging practical development and sensible growth for communities in the Southeast. We offer two basic programs: conservation and community outreach.

COLT works with landowners to provide voluntary conservation tools, primarily conservation easements, which protect undeveloped natural areas in the Southeast. By using conservation easements and other tools, we can encourage planning practices that promote natural areas in new developments. These same tools can also protect that family farm, hunt club property and other important open space.

Our community outreach programs in South Carolina involve collaborating with state, regional and county boards and agencies in various conservation and land planning and practical development initiatives.

By collaborating with property owners, developers, agencies and local governments, Community Open Land Trust is having a positive impact on the preservation of significant natural areas within our to forests, meadows, streams and wetlands in and near neighborhoods.

Community Open land Trust was incorporated in the State of South Carolina in April 2003 and received its non-profit charitable organization status from the IRS January 2004. The Land Trust celebrated its first year anniversary with the successful completion of three conservation easements protecting over 130 acres of significant wildlife habitat and natural areas, in and near neighborhoods in South Carolina. COLT currently holds nine conservation easements protecting almost 700 acres of forest, streams and wetlands.
