Jones County SWCD

The mission of the Jones Soil and Water Conservation District is to provide local leadership in the advancement of the protection and enhancement of the natural resources of Jones County by providing technical, educational, and financial assistance to the public by using all available resources.

The Jones Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a sub‐unit of state government that was officially formed in 1942. The office is co‐located with the Natural Resources Conservation Service Office in the USDA Service Center in Anamosa. Its five commissioners are elected to 4 year terms by the citizens of Jones County in the General Election. All positions are unpaid, and all contributions to the SWCD are tax deductible.

What do we do?

  • Cooperate with NRCS in applying conservation practices on the land
  • Headquarters for the Big Bear Creek Watershed Project
  • Responsible for approving cost‐share funds for conservation practices on land in Jones County
  • Sponsor of an annual conservation poster contest for local students
  • Grant student scholarships for high school seniors pursuing a career in agriculture or conservation
  • Hold the District’s annual Tree Sale
  • Sponsor of the annual Soil Stewardship week involving area churches
  • Chair of the Jones County Locally Led Conservation Group
  • Employer of two individuals working on conservation education issues and programs along with other state and federal employees of conservation agencies
  • Headquarters for the Jones County Women, Land & Legacy program
