Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve

The Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve is a non-profit land trust dedicated to the protection and preservation of natural areas on Madeline Island. The MIWP was formed in 1987 and is one of the oldest and most successful land trusts in the State of Wisconsin. The local land-trust movement is currently the fastest growing segment of our nationwide conservation effort.

The Preserve holds 2500 acres of forest, wetlands and trails on Madeline Island that provide plant and wildlife habitat and contribute to the natural beauty of the Island. The Preserve acquires land through purchase, donations and conservation easements. The nature preserve lands are open to the public for hiking, skiing, berry picking and hunting. Each summer we sponsor many field trips and evening programs for youth and adults about the natural history of the Apostle Island area.
