Malcolms Market Garden

Daniel and Ashley grew up just over the mountain in Albemarle County and Virginia is where they call home. Daniel has been involved in farming in different ways since 2006. They were married in 2008 and began working together to reach their goal of farming full time. Before moving back to Virginia, Daniel established a successful 180 member CSA in Delaware for the Delaware Nature Society. 2013 was their first season as MMG in Staunton, VA.

The farm location is on Bells Lane in the agricultural district of Staunton and has been farmed by many generations of Daniel’s family. It’s significance as one of a few remaining farms in operation within Staunton, as well as the scenic beauty it offers the local community have made it a local landmark. The fertile pastures along Lewis Creek are home to a cow/calf operation, leaf litter composting, and a 6 acre field of vegetables, which adds to the diversification of the farm.

Over the course of Spring, Summer and Fall seasons, we grow of over 30 different homegrown vegetables. These include spring peas and spinach, popular summer favorites sweet corn, tomatoes, melons, and beans as well as broccoli, kale, spinach, beets and many more. Whatever we’re growing, we pick fresh to sell at our local farmer’s market, our Farm Stand (starting in June), to local restaurants and distributers, and to our CSA members.

Healthy soil makes tasty vegetables! Working to maintain healthy soil is a high priority at Malcolms Market Garden and we incorporate many sustainable practices into our system including extensive use of cover crops to build fertility and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to support healthy populations of beneficial species in the field.
