The Kyoto Protocol formally came into effect in February 2005. Since then, more renewable energy, energy efficiency and other emission reduction projects (eg clean development mechanism (CDM) projects) have been developed in Asia. The trade in carbon credits, specifically, certified emission reductions (CERs), generated from these projects is fuelling the growth of the international carbon markets. For governments and the private sector, the challenge is to take advantage of emerging opportunities in developing countries without exposure to unacceptable political, legal or financial risks. For traders and financiers, the challenge is how to effectively and profitably deal with a new carbon commodity without assuming these risks.
