San Isabel Land Protection Trust

San Isabel Land Protection Trust is a nationally accredited 501(c)3 non-profit, non-political conservation organization working with landowners to protect their land and water in Custer, Fremont, Pueblo, and Huerfano Counties. To date, we’ve protected nearly 40,000 acres, 174 water rights, and approximately 61 miles of stream frontage with 127 conservation easements. Our focus is on protecting working ranches, agricultural and forest lands, water resources, wildlife habitat and scenic open spaces. We also support our community by facilitating parks and trails.

At San Isabel, we respect private property rights and believe that private landowners can be the best stewards of the land. We seek to partner with landowners to exercise their rights for the benefit of land and water conservation.

Our vision since 1995 remains clear: that our region forever remains a beautiful, wild and working landscape with a strong agricultural foundation and a vibrant, healthy community.

What We Do

Working ranches, abundant wildlife, and beautiful wide-open spaces might seem to be timeless elements of the Colorado landscape, but the state continues to witness increasing development pressures, particularly over water resources. While growth has benefits, the costs to the San Isabel region are significant, particularly through the sub-division and drying up of productive irrigated agricultural lands. Agriculture and tourism are two of Colorado’s most important economic sectors, and both depend on a healthy, intact and beautiful landscape. San Isabel Land Protection Trust works with and helps landowners protect these important ranches, farms and forest lands, wildlife habitat, and scenic views.
