Shady Lane Farm

Nathan and Doris Yoder bought their 15 acre farm in 1999 consisting of 5 acres tillable ground on which to grow plants and vegetables. The farm had one greenhouse and one grow tunnel to start planting in the spring. They expanded their nursery to four greenhouses where they enjoy growing annuals in potting plants and hanging baskets.

Are We Organic?
We at Shady Lane are not CERTIFIED even though we use organic and nonresidual products to raise healthy vegetables.  So...why not go CERTIFIED? We are currently not staffed for the documentation that it takes nor do we feel like our markets would permit the adjusted pricing. we are, Certified? Nope. Healthy? Absolutely! We grow our veggies as organic as possible!

Why Buy Locally?

Most produce in the US is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1500 miles before being sold. And this is when taking into account only US grown products! Those distances are substantially longer when we take into consideration produce imported from Mexico, Asia, Canada, South America, and other places.
Environmentally Sustainable

You can loosely define sustainable agriculture as farming that doesn’t use up resources faster than they can be replaced (such as: water, soil, labor, community support/services, etc.). Any type of agriculture that depletes or degrades its natural resources, and/or pollutes its environment, will eventually fail to produce results, and agriculture that isn't profitable will drive farmers out of business (this is a double-edged sword).Agriculture that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is sustainable. But to accomplish that cycle a sustainable agriculture system must make sense economically, consider social responsibility, and be environmentally healthy. Sounds difficult? It is - and it’s a fragile system just as our environment is fragile.
