"Delivering Local Food to You"
The Shenandoah Valley drew us in the first time we visited the area. Dennis had been here as a student at James Madison University. I am from Atlanta and fell in love with the farms and fence lines, green pastures and beautiful mountains.
By 2005 we had purchased a small farm and built a log cabin near Brownsburg, Virginia. Dennis worked from home for an internet advertising company and I started a garden. We enjoyed the vegetables and berries so much and had plenty to share so we started selling produce at our local Farmer’s Market in Lexington on Wednesdays. That was the beginning of our journey into the Buy Fresh Buy Local movement.
Our experience as vendors at the Lexington and Harrisonburg markets coupled with starting and managing a Farmer’s Market in Raphine at Orchardside Berry Farm and Yarn Shop increased our passion for the variety and flavor of local food. We still sell meat and dairy items from Mountain View Farm Products in Harrisonburg on Saturdays. We have met several small to medium size farmers and producers that sell exclusively at Farmer’s Markets who have no way to market or transport their products outside the Valley.
After talking to some of the farmers and producers Dennis and I decided we would like to create a way for CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture), buying clubs, restaurants and specialty stores to see what’s available from producers in the Valley and provide a means of transporting their products to you. We began Shenandoah Food to provide this service. Our son Ben and daughter Jessica joined us to help with the business.
