birding and wildlife viewing in over 1000,000 acres of refuge land on seven refuges, including 13,000 acres of refuge-managed Farmers Home Administration lands; many species of waterfowl, great blue herons, anhingas, wading birds, shorebirds; numerous migratory species; prothonotary warbler, bobolingk, American bittern, many species, deer, alligators; additional hiking trails and driving trails in development, observation decks; beautiful environment, vital habitat for fish and wildlife in the Delta region; visitors are encouraged to stop by and enjoy the wild side of Hillside, Holt Collier, Mathews Brake, Morgan Brake,, Panther Swamp, Theodore Roosevelt and Yazoo National Wildlife Refuges; daylight use only; maps, brochures at refuge headquarters. HIKING: Complex of seven seperate national refuges in southern part of Delta/Yazoo Basin; site of Teddy Roosevelt's famous bear hunt and where history of Teddy Bear began; explore Delta forest, lakes; abundant wildlife, including alligators; experience Delta history, culture: Alligator Slough Nature Trail- brake trail in Hillside National Wildlife Refuge area; nature areas; wildlife viewing: trails around Alligator Pond- in Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge area; recommended for hikers, nature lovers; other trails in area; observation towers overlooking lakes; Holt Collier Observation Tower provides best vantage point. Note: Exercise caution during hunting seasons.
