Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Inc.

It is the mission of the Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Inc. to preserve open space in Southern Ulster County for the benefit of present and future generations. We aim to conserve our community’s environmental heritage, to promote voluntary preservation of land, and to protect scenic, natural, recreational, agricultural lands. We work to strengthen public sensitivity to environmental issues and the value of open space and to encourage environmentally sensitive growth.

Preserving land for the future of Southern Ulster County

The Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Inc. preserves and protects land for the future of southern Ulster County. In its fifteen years of existence it has preserved farms, open fields, riverfront, hillsides and mountain tops, the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, scenic views, wetlands and marsh, forest and woodlands, water resources, habitat, and biodiversity.

We have recently acquired an additional 65 acres for the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. This will extend the current 12 miles of trail another 11.5 miles. We partnered with Open Space Institutes land affiliate Open Space Conservancy to purchase this section of rail bed running from the Town of New Paltz line, through the Town of Rosendale and a mile and a half in to the Town of Ulster. Currently, we are engaging in a collaborative fundraising campaign to restore the trail and repair the trestle in Rosendale. The Wallkill Valley Land Trust is also working on several farmland protection projects throughout southern Ulster County, and developing additional outreach and education aspects in order to inform the residents and visitors to the benefits of Conservation Easements.

The Wallkill Valley Land Trust collaborates with organizations and municipalities in our region. We have worked on projects with the Town and Village of New Paltz, the Town of Lloyd, The Open Space Institute, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation among other groups.
