Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust Surpasses 400,000 Acres Conserved
As of December 31, the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust (CCALT) had conserved a total of 401,469 acres of working lands in partnership with Colorado ranchers and farmers.
CCALT received the El Pomar Foundation’s Julie and Spencer Penrose Award in October as a result of its conservation successes. The award is granted to an outstanding nonprofit and provides a $50,000 cash prize, which will aid the land trust in continuing to preserve agricultural land in Colorado.

USDA Announces CRP Signup
USDA predicts bidding will be ‘highly competitive’
USDA has set the next general Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup for May 20 to June 14. Accepted contracts will begin October 1.
Under the CRP, you can receive cost-share assistance to plant long-term resource-conserving covers and receive an annual rental payment for the length of your 10 or 15 year contract.
The total amount of acres accepted under 'Signup 45' will be determined based on the environmental benefits and the cost of the acres offered. USDA predicts that the CRP offer process will be “highly competitive.” So, sign up today!
USDA plans other signups this spring for continuous CRP programs such as the Highly Erodible Land Initiative and Initiative to Restore Grasslands, Wetlands and Wildlife.

Speaking at a Conservation Leadership Council (CLC) meeting in Washington, DC, two former cabinet members stressed the importance of focusing conservation policy on private landowners.
Former Bush Administration Officials Champion Private Sector Conservation
Former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton said that “Conservation, free market solutions and American ingenuity are core American values that can produce innovative results for protecting our open spaces, valuable natural resources and iconic natural wonders. As the demand for fiscal responsibility grows, the CLC is at the forefront of reigniting the passion that conservatives have for market entrepreneurship and environmental stewardship.”
Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and former North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer explained “Too often we rely on the government to safeguard our natural capital when the private sector can implement practical solutions in a much more efficient and effective way.”

Farmer Connects Breweries to Locally Grown Hops
John Condzella, a fourth generation Long Island farmer, started growing hops on his family farm two years ago. When he created "Condzella Hops" his mission was to inspire a hop movement in New York, and connect local farmers to local brewers to create a truly local beer.
"Condzella Hops" is fundraising to import a hop harvester that can be collaboratively used by any hop grower in the area. This machine will ensure that all farmers can efficiently and profitably harvest hops.
Initiatives like this are important for the conservation of family farms. When harvesting crops is innovative and profitable, family farmers can continue to be active participants in their communities and will be able to resist development pressures.
