Matt Hancock
The core of our business is managing our own land base to high environmental standards and sustainable forest management principles. In 1848, my great-great-great grandfather purchased a 400-acre timber stand in Casco,
thus dawning our family's successful stewardship of timberland management. 153 years, and six generations have since passed, yet the principles that have given our business sustained value remain today. We have managed timber operations from men felling and hauling trees with axes and oxen, to doing the same with state-of-the-art, highly technical, mechanical equipment.
On a selective basis for a limited clientele, Hancock Land Company works in a service provider role. Offering a start to finish program.
- Research, shop, and acquire a timberland property
- produce a "state of the art - sustainable forest management operation" (arrange for FSC certification),
- preserve and enhance the forest system's native biological diversity,
- construct and continually improve a digital geographic database (ArcView/ArcInfo GIS system),
- develop a formal landscape planning process,
- create and update periodically a comprehensive forest management plan,
- provide competitive returns from a most effective harvesting, merchandising, and marketing of selected forest
products,
- increase the value of our client's asset through a strategic
management agenda, and
- administer and reconcile this complex flow of
commerce, supplemented with annual operating and capital budgets, detailed quarterly financial reports, and flexibility for other areas of statistical analysis and formal communication.
Additionally, Hancock Land Company serves the independent and small woodlot owners, land trusts, land associations, and other land owning entities as a solution to various timber harvesting and forest management objectives.
Hancock Land Company has taken the lead in Southern and Southwestern Maine to ensure that our forests are managed to the highest standards. The importance of providing a steady flow of wood products and jobs to the region is balanced with the imperative to protect the ecology and the
long-term forest base opportunities. In June we completed an in-depth assessment of our forest operations and received a certification award that our forests are "state-of-the-art" under the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council.
