Founded in 1987, Delta Land Trust is a non-profit conservation organization based in Madison, Mississippi with operations throughout Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Delta Land Trust has been saving the forests and farms you love sine 1987. Our purpose is to protect wildlife habitat and open space and research and promote sustainable economic development in the Ark-La-Miss region.
Whether the loss of wildlife habitat and open space results from clearing of Delta hardwood forests for agriculture in the 1960s and 1970s or from urban sprawl around Little Rock, Ft. Smith, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Jackson, Memphis or other cities in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, the human residents of the Ark-La-Miss are rapidly losing the natural heritage that previous generations took for granted. In the process, millions of acres of wildlife habitat and productive farmland are being lost to development.
With our conservation easement program, the Trust has protected almost 18,000 acres in perpetuity and we have acquired an additional 150 acres in fee title. Although these achievements make us one of the largest land trusts in the country in terms of acreage protected, we have a long way to go in securing the natural heritage that the current and previous generations have enjoyed.
We promote smart growth based on the sustainable use of natural resources. Perhaps Teddy Roosevelt said it best when he said, "The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which is must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value." With our sustainable development program the Trust sponsors and conducts economic studies and develops demonstration projects to illustrate sustainable approaches to economic development in the Ark-La-Miss.
