McCandless LLC specializes in estate planning, estate administration and trust administration. Our broad experience in these practice areas and our deep understanding of the legal principles involved combine to allow us to offer our clients excellent and efficient work at a reasonable cost.
Estate Planning
In the area of estate planning, we prepare wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, advance health-care directives and other documents. For those clients whose financial or familial situations require more extensive planning, we offer a variety of specialized documents and other services.

Estate Administration
In the area of estate administration, we assist and advise personal representatives of decedents' estates, compiling relevant information and preparing Probate Court and tax forms related to all aspects of the settlement of the estates. As part of our representation of personal representatives, we frequently confront a wide variety of tax issues and prepare and file an array of forms and documents related to estate, gift and income taxes.

Betsey McCandless, Esq.
Betsey McCandless received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College in 1977 and a J.D. in 1982 from Hofstra University School of Law, where she was an Associate Editor of the Hofstra Law Review. She began her legal career in New York City, working there from 1982 to 1985. She settled in Maine in 1985 and joined Pierce Atwood in Portland. In 1992 she co-founded Maine’s first boutique trusts and estates firm, McCandless & Hunt. After seeing her firm through several incarnations, she established McCandless LLC in June of 2005 and was joined by all seven of the longtime paralegals and legal assistants of McCandless Epstein & O’Donovan LLP.
Betsey is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a national professional organization to which she was elected in 1995. She was a member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Advisory Committee on Probate Rules for nine years, serving as Chair from 1996 through 2003. She was Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation and is currently a Trustee of the Diocesan Funds for the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. In addition, she frequently lectures on charitable giving, estate administration and estate planning.
Betsey has three children, two stepchildren and five stepgrandchildren. She and her husband, Doug Brown, live in West Falmouth. Painting with watercolor and oil, boating and traveling top her list of favorite activities.
